How to use the team generator

Paste the list of participants, one name per line (up to 500). Then choose how to split them: by number of teams (for example, 4 teams) or by people per team (for example, pairs or groups of 5). Press "Generate teams" and each team appears on its own card.

"Copy teams" gives you the result as text, ready to paste into a group chat, a classroom channel, or a document. If a name appears twice by mistake, "Remove duplicate names" counts it only once.

How are the teams assigned?

First the list is shuffled with the Fisher-Yates algorithm and the browser's cryptographic generator, so every order is equally likely. Then the names are dealt like cards: one to each team in turn until the list runs out.

That keeps teams balanced in size: there is never more than one person of difference between the largest and the smallest. For example, 23 people in 4 teams end up as 6, 6, 6, and 5.

Ideas for using it

• Classrooms: group projects, debates, presentations, or study groups without anyone feeling the teacher picked favorites.
• Sports: pick sides for a pickup soccer game, a basketball match, or a volleyball tournament.
• Board games and parties: Pictionary, charades, trivia, or any team game.
• Pairs: choose 2 people per team for padel tournaments, co-op games, or study buddies.
• Work: team-building activities, hackathons, or breakout groups in a training session.

Tips for more even teams

• If skill levels vary a lot, separate the captains or strongest players first: generate as many teams as you need with them, then deal everyone else in a second round.
• Agree before generating that the result is final. Regenerating until you get the teams you wanted defeats the purpose of randomness.
• Share your screen or paste the result in the chat so everyone sees it at the same time.
